Early light, illuminated bedroom. I see myself more clearly now, trying to get out alive, surrounded by the years. Videotapes wearing out, and songs I don’t remember right. Time compressed, oh in that house I see us all again. Once on a warm summer night, you and I were up and out and singing in the field behind the neighbor’s house. I close my eyes and there’s the moon, so full and bright. But now I’ll never see you again, so I’ll come clean: I’m cowardly; in my folly, I'm still not sorry. I feel alright? But I’m not alright. Spacing out in the dark of my apartment, I wonder, in a daze, if I might see your ghost, but realize there’s nothing here for you. Still I’m afraid, so I’m trying hard to look the other way: Into your neighbor’s backyard, I know you must be out there, still singing in that field. Well, I’m not alone, and I’ve never been. I feel our home surrounding me: the haunted roads, and humble trees. Because of you, I’ll never be alone.
